What does 'Animal-Kind' mean?

More than plant-based – a choice for compassion.

In a world where animals are often seen as resources rather than living beings, we choose a different perspective. Being 'animal-kind' is a way of life where compassion, respect, and awareness are central.

More than a diet – a way of life

Where the word 'plant-based' primarily describes what you eat, 'animal-kind' primarily describes why you do it. It's a choice that goes beyond food alone. It is an attitude towards life itself.

Being animal-kind means:

  • Not wanting to be part of systems that exploit or cause animals to suffer.
  • Consciously choosing food and products that do not cause animal suffering.
  • Living in a way that also respects the well-being of our planet and future generations.

So it's not just about what's on your plate, but also about the clothes you wear, the products you buy, and the choices you make every day.

Why 'Animal-Friendly' and 'Cruelty-Free' fall short

The term 'animal-friendly' is often misleading. Can a product that requires an animal's death truly be 'friendly'? Even meat with a 'better life' label ends in the slaughterhouse. True friendship does not end with a knife.

  • 'Animal-friendly' meat does not exist.
  • 'Cruelty-free' does not mean free from animal products.
  • 'Free-range' does not mean a life free from suffering.

'Cruelty-free' is often narrowly defined, only indicating that the final product has not been tested on animals. It says nothing about the presence of animal ingredients, for which suffering is an inherent part. That is why 'animal-kind' is a more honest and holistic term: it is about actively choosing compassion in every step.

Plant-based ≠ Animal-Kind (but they reinforce each other)

Eating plants is not primarily a favor to plants – but it is an act of compassion towards animals. By choosing plant-based food, you save animal lives and reduce animal suffering. That is why eating plant-based is often the most animal-kind choice you can make.

But being animal-kind goes beyond nutrition: it's about every conscious choice that contributes to a world where animals are not seen as resources, but as living beings with inherent value.

Are my choices kind to animals?

Where 'plant-based' is often associated with health or diet, 'animal-kind' immediately raises this deeper question. If more and more people ask themselves that question, it's not just our plate that will change – but our society as well.

A new word for a new movement

The word 'animal-kind' is still young, but its message is timeless. Language shapes how we think – and by introducing new words, we can also stimulate new ways of thinking and acting.

By using this term, we are building a movement based on radical honesty and compassion. A movement for those who believe that 'less bad' is not good enough.

Join the Animal-Kind Movement

At Human Herbivores, we believe that humanity finds its true strength in compassion. And compassion begins with the choices we make every day – choices that are not only good for ourselves, but also for the animals with whom we share this planet.

Eat animal-kind. Live animal-kind. Think animal-kind.

Because a kinder world starts with us.
